Nellie Rose – 13 months (May 2010)
May 2010 (month 13) has been an active month for little Ms. Nellie Rose – activities included celebrating her 2nd official Mother’s Day by going to her first circus, enjoying a new “car” named Lady Love, her first Memorial Day parade, and the completion of her new “big girl” room – whew….this little lady is a mover and a shaker!

The Story – April 15, 2009
The morning started for us at 4:30 a.m. when we got up and got ready to go to the hospital. Erin made sure to do her hair and makeup and was looking picture perfect for the big day. We checked into the labor and delivery triage center around 5:45 to do the check in paperwork, get Erin hooked up on her IV and all of the other preparatory activities that needed to be done.
They wheeled Erin to the labor and delivery room around 8 a.m. and started the petocin drip – this is the medicine that starts the contractions. Everything was going along smoothly and as the contractions increased, Erin decided to get the epidural around 10:00 when things started to get pretty intense. I swear that if I have any kind of sickness going forward, no matter what it is, I am going to ask for an epidural – that stuff is a wonder drug!
After the medicine kicked in, Erin’s mom (a.k.a. the Mothership/Grandmother) arrived at the hospital. We all sat and just talked – the whole thing was amazingly calm, cool and collected. The doctors and nurses would come in and check on Erin periodically and around 2:00, the exam revealed that Erin was 10cm dilated.
Shortly thereafter, the doctor wanted to do a “test push” to see how things were going to go….with her mother holding her right leg and me holding her left, Erin bore down for a solid 10 seconds. I must laugh because as she pushed, so did I – the doctor said to me, “Dad, on the second push, you need to breahe so you don’t faint and hit the floor – we need you here for this.” Push number 2 revealed that it was in fact GO TIME! The doctor said, “Yes folks, we are going to have a baby – let me get my gown on.” Push 2 went well and then push 3 and Nellie took her first breath in the world! Amazing. I had the pleasure of cutting the cord and witnessing my daughter being placed on her mother’s breast – the most overwhelming experience I have ever had in my life. If we don’t do anything else in this life, I could leave knowing that we did this and would go away a happy man….
We moved to the regular room a few hours later and stayed in the hospital until Friday afternoon – the first couple of nights were restless as you can imagine. We stirred at the slighest sound and were up every two hours feeding – it was the best sleepless nights we have had ever. Again, amazing.
We are home now, slightly bleary eyed from keeping the feeding schedule and working on little sleep – looking forward to getting the routine down – but every passing day brings new surprises, moments of joy beyond words, and we celebrate every single minute.

Thank you all for your notes and well wishes – we are all doing well and just adjusting to life with Nellie; we try to sleep when she does but find ourselves staying awake just to stare at her….she is amazing.
Sorry for the delay in getting more pictures out and we will do better to get them posted in a more timely manner going forward.

WELCOME NELLIE ROSE CHUNG!
THE DAY IS HERE!!!! We welcomed Nellie Rose into the world this afternoon at 2:15 p.m. at Holy Cross Hospital in Silver Spring, MD. Nellie tipped the scales at 8 pounds, 9.3 ounces and was a whopping 20 inches long.
Erin was nothing short of a warrior through the whole labor – in true Erin efficiency style, she delivered after only pushing three times!!
Nellie and Erin are doing great this evening and we plan to go home on Friday! Thank you all for your kind notes, prayers and thoughts – our cup runneth over….

Today is the day!
It is 3:42 am and I have just woken up and am ready to start the day…..saw the doctor yesterday and all is well-we were told to go to the hospital at 6am this morning to begin the induction process and if all goes according to plan we should have Nellie by 1pm TODAY!!
We spent yesterday is disbelief-well i was in disbelief. David was giddy with excitement, where I was a little more cautious and serious. David is the fun one, we all know, I am slightly more reserved and kept thinking about the fact that i still have to go through this labor thing. It was an emotional day, as I am sure today will be as well. Last minute laundry, cleaning up for both motherships arrival, last minute baking and tying a pink bow around the wreath on the door kept us busy. We went out for italian ( i ate more than i have ever eaten) and home to watch the Housewives of NYC and were both so exhausted from the anticipation that we were both fast asleep by 11:30p.
Mom is driving down this morning-she plans to leave at 5:30am-though I have a hard time believing she will wait much later than 4am to leave the house. MoMa will arrive tomorrow. I look forward to seeing both of them hold their first grandchild. The Jersey girls arrive on Saturday evening to welcome the newest Green Girl-it’s very exciting.
While things will be hectic, and we will be getting Nellie used to her new surroundings, if you are in the neighborhood and would like to stop by either the hospital or the house, please do so. We want Nellie to be as gregarious and have a love for people just like her Daddy.
One more thing….As some of you know, I am going through the confirmation process with my brother so he can be Nellie’s Godfather. Lord, how i wish this was something i stuck with when I was 14! Anyway, We must pick a confirmation name-typically a saint. I chose Saint Margaret of Anticoh-she is the patron Saint of Safe Childbirth. I have been praying to her regulalry, so if you get a chance today, please call on her and say a little prayer for my new family.
Be Well and we will keep you posted!

48 hours and counting!
48 hours from now, we will be at the hospital and starting the induction process. Wow – it is hard to believe that we are so close to all of this becoming a reality.
We went to the doctor last Friday and were literally put on “high alert” – the doctor said that Nellie could enter the world at any time! Erin is fully effaced; dilation still remains at 1cm…. This news made for a very anxious weekend and we were thinking that we might have an Easter baby. Alas, the little one decided that she wanted to stay in the oven for a little while longer; I am guessing she knew that it is still kind of chilly out here….
We go to the doctor tomorrow for one final visit before the induction – really just a formality to make sure that everything is still going well for Erin, that Nellie is still in the proper position, etc. Our bags are packed, the car seat has been installed, camera batteries have been charged, and email distribution lists have been created – we are just ready to make the OFFICIAL announcement!
Thank you all again for your kind notes, gifts, thoughts, and prayers – please keep the positive energy flowing our way for the next few days!

Last day of school…
So, i woke up this morning and put my jeans on and a sweater-much more casual than I would usually wear to work and off i went for my last day at the office. I feel like today is the last day of school and I’m about to begin summer vacation!!! I have a few things to tie up and then I will be done for the next few months and i will begin a different kind of work, i suppose. It’s kind of sad to leave the office but exciting to have this new identity.
Today is our 39 week appointment. We are both hoping for progress and also maybe an Easter baby arrival. I keep telling David she likes it in there and we probably won’t meet her until Wednesday. My heartburn is still a killer but more annoying is the swelling in my ankles, feet and legs. They are like two big ham hocks with sausages for toes. She continues to move around-but less than before-as i think she is running out of room. I wonder how big she is? Considering I ate and entire Entemann’s coffee cake in 2 days by myself, who knows!
Be well, Happy Easter!

Week 38 Checkup Results – 90 over 1
Well, we are making progress – the doctor checkup last Friday revealed that Erin is 90% effaced and 1 cm dialated. The progress on the effacement is very important because this means that Erin will not have to go into the hospital early to receive the gel as a part of the inducement process on the 15th.
Rather, we will go in on the 15th, get the shot of Pitocin and we are off to the races! Pitocin is the synthetic form of the hormone oxytocin, given intravenously to induce labor artificially. Contractions usually begin about 30 minutes after pitocin has been started….
So in the mean time, we are just in a hurry up and wait mode – got the bags packed for the hospital this weekend, nesting activities continued (did the deck and put out new cushions, etc) and have been doing a lot of walking since that is supposed to help move things along…
Fetal development update:
Nellie is in the homestretch: As she gains weight and grows to approximately 20 inches, she has very little room to maneuver. She is moving in position for delivery, her head cradled in the pelvic cavity. The brain is one of the last organs to fully develop, and it’s almost there, its neurons firing away.
Will keep you posted and hope you all are well…
